Prototype Information for the GS & SV Railroad
Although the GS & SV Railroad is fictitious, it is based on various prototype entities in and around Deposit and Susquehanna in New York state.

The Starrucca Viaduct is found in Deposit, NY, about 25 miles from Binghamton and 50 miles from Scranton.
It is on the old Erie line from Binghamton to Port Jervis.
It was constructed in 1847-1848, is 1100 feet long and stands
about 110 feet high at its tallest. It is built completely out of
stone. |

Today (meaning May, 2007), it is only single tracked across the viaduct.
This view is looking timetable west, geographically south east. The track turns to the right in the distance
and starts the grade down to Susquehanna. In the other direction, behind the camera, the line continues
up grade until it reaches Gulf Summit. This is how the layout gets its name.
The viaduct was double tracked as recently as 2005. It is owned by
Norfolk Southern.

This is the Susquehanna Depot. It is in the process of being restored to its once magnificent colors.

Here is the view timetable east, which is probably
something like geographically north.
Deposit and the Starruca Viaduct are left of the hill in the distance.
In front of the depot are a number of Amtrak/NJ Transit coaches,
coupled to a Stillwell coach and two Erie boxcars.

Here, we see Erie boxcar, 76382, which was in the
siding next to the depot. This belongs to the Chemung Valley Railroad
Historical Society, along with an Erie camp car and the Stillwell coach
that is also pictured here.

This sign gives information on the viaduct which was built in 1847-8.

Between the viaduct and Susquehanna, we see a set of
empty coal hoppers sitting in what was once the eastbound main, but is
now a siding owing to the single tracking of the viaduct.

Heading south from Susquehanna, on the way to
Binghamton, I found this old interlocking tower. It is labeled "SR".
This was found at the (timetable) west end of the Susquehanna yard and
is where helpers sat for the long climb up the grade to Gulf Summit.
