Laying the Yard

The laying of the yard started while the main line and initial continuous running loop were being laid.

Here is a view looking east of the west end ladder. The double main (tracks 1 and 2) are on the left. Moving to the right, we have:

  • Track 3 - Receiving track
  • Track 5 - Scales
  • Track 6 - Yard track
  • Track 7 - Yard track
  • Track 8 - Yard track
  • Track 9 - Yard track
  • Track 10 - Yard track
  • Track 11 - Running track
  • Track 12 - TOFC track

Also visible, parallel to the yard ladder is the caboose track. This track did not actually exist in Scranton. Instead, they were typically stored on the yard ladder.

Here is the yard after being laid and wired, viewed from the east. We can see a freight train arriving on the receiving track - six propane/chemical tankers, four covered hoppers followed by assorted boxcars.

The east yard ladder is a series of Peco code 55 curved turnouts.

Now we see the same train minutes later as it close to the west end of the yard.

You can see the foreshortening of the telephoto lens here. The six tank cars and four hoppers seen in the previous shot are directly facing the camera. Additionally, the cross-over on the main at the bottom left is a pair of #10 turnouts which cover almost 2 feet..
