Research in Planning the Scranton Layout
Internet Photographs of Scranton and the Erie Lackawanna
There are an enormous number of photographs of all things Erie, DL&W and Erie Lackawanna to be found on the Internet. There are fewer of Scranton.
However, one of the best, from my layout's perspective, was taken by Robert Rinker in 1974.

Internet Maps of Scranton
There are some key maps available on the internet:
The Library of Congress
The Library of Congress has an extensive collection of photographs and other
information on Scranton. This was done, I suspect, as part of the Steamtown USA
project.
On-site Visit
We took a trip to Scranton in May, 2007 - Planes, Trains & Automobiles - staying at the
Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, in what was previously the headquarters of the DL&W.
The basic itinerary was:
Friday:
- Arrive Wilkes-Barre airport early a.m., drive to the hotel & check-in
- Go visit Steamtown:
- Trolley Museum
- Trolley ride to Wilkes-Barre
- Tour Steamtown Museum
Saturday:
- Steam excursion to East Stroudsburg, including:
- Brief stop at Tobyhanna to check out the locomotive
- Dedication ceremony at Cresco for the restored depot
- Tour of the old East Stroudsburg interlocking tower
- Afterwards, a trip to Nicholson to view the Tunkhannock Viaduct
Sunday:
- Drive out to the Starrucca Viaduct and Susquehanna Depot
- Visit the Lackawanna County Mine, including a trip 250' underground
- Driving tour of the area, including south through Taylor and Pittston,
along the route of the old Bloomsburg Branch
- Fly home.
Reference Books
I have a number of reference books that give information on Scranton, one of which,
the "Erie Lackawanna in Color. Volume III - The East End", contains a detailed track plan from the
approximate key frame that I am modeling.
