Trees

When I started this layout I didn't really know much about model trees and had just done the Woodland Scenics' clumps of foliage on armatures kind of tree. You can see these on the Gulf Summit & Susquehanna Valley Railroad.

What I did know was that others had really cool looking trees. And I needed to get some. Well, I needed to get some ready-made ones first.

There are an abundance of trees around the EL and around Scranton. Here we have the west portal of the Nay Aug tunnel. Pennsylvannia in this area includes over a hundred species. See here for more details.

On this page, select any framed image to see a more detailed view.

The first thing I did was get some trees from Scenic Express. This was simply because they had a sale price on them when I was buying the backdrops. When I got them, I thought they were really detailed compared with my prior trees. But realistically, this was an opinion borne of ignorance rather than knowledge of the field.

As we'll see, there are a lot better. And a lot worse.

BTW, these are 3" Autumn-tone deciduous trees EX1233, 6 per pack. About $2.50 each.

These are from JTT.

TR-2025. Z scale econo-deciduous tree, 1"-2", 6 per pack. About $1.25 each.

Fully assembled and packaged in a large box, glued in polystyrene foam.

Although described as an econo-tree, this is actually part of their premium line.

These are from JTT.

TR-2026. N scale econo-deciduous tree, 2"-3", 4 per pack. About $2.15 each.

Fully assembled and packaged in a large box, glued in polystyrene foam.

Although described as an econo-tree, this is actually part of their premium line.

TR-2030. N scale econo-sycamore tree, 2"-3", 4 per pack. About $2.15 each.

TR-2052. N scale Autumn maple, 2"-3", 4 per pack. About $2.15 each.

Fully assembled and packaged in a large box, glued in polystyrene foam.

Although described as an econo-tree, this is actually part of their premium line.

These are from JTT.

TR-2110. N scale Super Scenic Fall deciduous, 2"-2.5", 9 per pack. About $1.35 each.

Fully assembled and packaged in a plastic package with compartments for each tree.

You really cannot see the bases in the link above. They are supposedly removable, but that's a joke because the base is firmly glued to the trunk - you need to cut it off!

These trees are not very good. Luckily, I have lots of foliage foam to fix them up. IMO, these do not qualify as decent trees and are not pre-built in the sense that you can just put them out on the layout.

I also bought three other sets of these:

  • TR-2101 N scale Super Scenic sycamore,  2.5"-3.5", 9/pack. About $1.35 each.
  • TR-2104 N scale Super Scenic Fall sycamore, 2.5"-3.5", 9/pack. About $1.35 each.
  • TR-2107 N scale Super Scenic deciduous,  2"-2.5", 9/pack. About $1.35 each.

This is the packaging for the Super Scenic trees from JTT.

This is the packaging for the Premium Series (which includes the econo- labelled trees above) from JTT.

A few days later, I picked up these from my LHS.

These are from Bachman and are p/n 32101, SceneScapes pine trees. These are 3"-4" and there are 9 in the package. They sell for about $1 each which is very good value compared with some.

These arrived with bases like the JTT above, but, unlike the JTT bases, these are not glued on and come off quite easily.

And these too. These ones are p/n 32104, SceneScapes spruce trees. These are 3"-4" and there are 9 in the package. They sell for about $1 each.

These arrived with bases like the JTT above, but, unlike the JTT bases, these are not glued on and come off quite easily.

Add in a couple of vehicles and the scene improves instantly! Before any other scenicing like ground cover or terrain.
